After a couple of months, the scaffoldings disappeared from the southern front of the castle in Lidzbark Warmiński. Cleaned and strengthened bricks restore its medieval glamour. The restored small towers, the roof and the entrance gates, the reconstructed colours of the window frames – all add life to the immense castle. The new look of the castle impresses the town residents and tourists, increasingly keen to visit. Moreover, this is not the end of renovation works on the bishops’ residence.
From November 2014, the southern front of the castle was hidden under the scaffoldings. Arduous conservation works were conducted on the layout of bricks, lime joints, recesses and window framings, as well as the refurbishment of the roof. The bricks of the southern front required cleaning and the structure strengthening. The lime joints were also subjected to conservation – the weakened ones were strengthened and the damaged ones were refilled. The entrance to the castle and the window frames in the southern wing were also subject to conservation work. The refurbishment also covered both corner towers. The roof structure required structural refurbishment and strengthening. The roofing was stripped. All the roof tiles were washed, inspected and then subjected to selection. Those in the best shape returned to the castle roof. The others, unsuitable for use, were replaced with new ceramic tiles specially made to order (the new ones are exactly the shape and colours of the original tiles). Refurbishment works on the southern wing roof were completed at the turn of April and May 2015. Not only was the roof structure protected and strengthened but also almost half of the old roofing tiles were reused, which allowed the colour of the roofing to be maintained. The outcomes surpassed expectations. All the works produced spectacular outcomes. The castle is becoming increasingly beautiful and it welcomes a visit. With their restored finish, the corner towers, set among the greenery, are visible above the town panorama. The satisfaction is even greater as this is not the end of the work. Refurbishment work of the fronts moves to the eastern and western wings of the castle. Highly advanced works on installations (water distribution and sewers, power supply, lighting protection, central heating) are to be continued in the castle interiors. In the gallery, conservation and restoration works continue on the polychromies, which are unique in the European context.
The current refurbishment and conservation works are possible thanks to the project “Conservation and restoration of the 14th c. castle in Lidzbark Warmiński – a pearl of gothic architecture in Poland – stage II” implemented with support of the Norway Grants, EEA funds originating from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, Ministry of Culture and National Heritage funds and funds of the territorial government of Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodship.
